Before and After: This Living Room Got a Dramatically Different New Look
This is how this living room looked when it was listed by a realtor: a cozy mix of cool aqua and warm brown tones and the ubiquitous builder-grade ceiling fan. The room was bright and inviting, but its new owners were ready for a fresh look.
Alison Elefante of @rubyandpeach and @rubyandpeachphoto cleverly created a black-and-white base on which to layer colors and textures. The fireplace and chimney breast were already black and white, so painting the walls on either side black made perfect design sense. The new paint job emphasizes the fireplace, whereas before it was somewhat lost on the full white wall. Replacing the white shelves with rich wooden ones avoided a high-contrast striped look in favor of a warmer, more subtle one. Similarly, the new mirror tempers the black-and-white palette with a warm tone.
The monochromatic foundation is also perfect for layering vibrant, saturated hues upon. That inky velvet sofa is gorgeous, especially when paired with luscious tan leather. The peach, pink, and goldenrod are surprisingly perfect counterpoints to the navy, creating a fabulous, welcoming salon with a touch of vintage charm. Placing a black-and-white pillow and throw on chairs also helps to draw the palette out into the rest of the room.
